Quintin Potgieter was born in the Western Cape, South Africa, and attended Paarl Gimnasium High School, a renowned rugby school known for producing talents like Handre Pollard and Jean de Villiers. Growing up in Ceres, he attended Paarl Gimnasium High School where he developed his skills as a powerful and versatile loose forward, excelling in both attack and defense during his schoolboy career.
Potgieter emerged as a standout performer for Western Province (DHL WP) at the U18 Craven Week in 2024, held at Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp. His physicality and work rate in the loose trio earned him significant recognition. On July 12, 2025, during the final day of the 2025 FNB U18 Craven Week in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, Potgieter was in action for DHL WP against SWD, where he showcased his ball-carrying ability.
In 2025, Potgieter was called up to the SA Schools squad as an injury replacement for Josh Neill, who suffered a rib injury during the Craven Week. Potgieter’s inclusion in the SA Schools team, which faced the SA Schools ‘A’ team at Hoërskool Middelburg on July 17, 2025, highlighted his rising status. He also represented the SA U18 squad in the U18 International Series in August 2025, playing against France, Ireland, and England at venues in Paarl and Cape Town. His performances as a loose forward, particularly his tackling and breakdown work, were noted in match reports, contributing to South Africa’s strong showing, including a 43–21 victory over France to win the Medhi Narjissi Trophy.
Potgieter’s versatility allows him to play as a flanker (No. 6) or number eight (No. 8), with his physical presence and ability to dominate collisions making him a standout. He is part of Western Province’s junior development system, which feeds into the DHL Stormers’ United Rugby Championship (URC) squad.
At 18, Potgieter is on a clear path to professional rugby with DHL Western Province and potentially the DHL Stormers in the URC. His performances at the U18 level position him as a strong candidate for the Junior Springboks (SA U20) in 2026 or 2027, with the potential to follow in the footsteps of Western Province loose forwards like Evan Roos or Hacjivah Dayimani. His physicality and breakdown skills make him a prime prospect for a professional contract, and continued development in the Western Province system could see him compete for a senior URC role in the near future.
