Nicolaas Jacobus Janse van Rensburg, born on May 6, 1994, in Pretoria, South Africa, is a professional rugby union player known for his versatility as a lock and flanker. Standing at 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) and weighing approximately 116 kg (255 lbs), Janse van Rensburg has carved out a distinguished career, primarily with Montpellier Hérault Rugby in the French Top 14, complemented by brief but notable international exposure with the Springboks. His journey reflects a blend of early promise, international club success, and a late-emerging role in South African rugby.

Janse van Rensburg made his first-class debut in 2014 during the Vodacom Cup with the Blue Bulls, coming off the bench in matches against Griquas and the Pumas in Pretoria and Nelspruit, respectively. He also played in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby with the Bulls, establishing himself as a promising lock. However, seeking greater opportunities, he moved to France in 2016 to join Montpellier Hérault Rugby in the Top 14, a decision influenced by his former coach Jake White, who saw potential in his physicality and work rate.

Since joining Montpellier in June 2016, Janse van Rensburg has been a cornerstone of their forward pack. His Top 14 debut came on August 20, 2016, starting against Stade Toulousain. Over the years, he has made over 66 appearances for Montpellier by March 2020, scoring 45 points through tries. His standout seasons include 2020/2021, when he helped Montpellier win the European Challenge Cup, and 2021/2022, when the club clinched the Top 14 title, defeating Castres Olympique in the final. He also played in the 2018 Top 14 final, though Montpellier lost to Castres (29-13). His ability to play both lock and flanker has made him a valuable asset, with his physical presence and lineout skills earning praise.

Janse van Rensburg’s international career began with a call-up to the South Africa 'A' team in 2021, where he came off the bench in a 17–13 victory over the British and Irish Lions in Cape Town. That same year, he earned his first Springbok cap on August 21, 2021, during the Rugby Championship against Argentina in Port Elizabeth, under the guidance of coaches Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber, who recognized his potential despite his earlier lack of prominence in South Africa. In 2024, he was recalled to the Springbok squad, reflecting his loyalty to South Africa after reportedly declining offers to play for France. His versatility as a lock or flanker has been noted as a good fit for the Springboks’ dynamic forward requirements.
