Johann Neethling Fouché, born on January 10, 1993, in Rustenburg, South Africa, is a professional rugby union player renowned for his role as a tighthead prop. Standing at approximately 1.89 meters (6 ft 2 in) and weighing around 120 kg (264 lbs), Fouché has established himself as a formidable presence in the scrum, playing primarily for the DHL Stormers in the United Rugby Championship (URC) and Western Province in the Currie Cup. His career is marked by resilience through early injuries, steady development, and a late-career surge that has positioned him as a potential Springbok.

In 2015, Fouché played for UP Tuks in the Varsity Cup, starting in a 29–29 draw against UFS Shimlas, and was named as a potential injury replacement for the Bulls in the Super Rugby season opener against the Stormers. However, his early career was plagued by injuries, including a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2013 U20 Rugby World Cup, as well as operations on his neck, hand, and ankle between ages 19 and 24. These setbacks led to significant time in rehabilitation, which Fouché later described as taking him to a “dark place” but ultimately fostering his growth as both a player and a person.

Fouché made his Super Rugby debut with the Stormers, impressing with his set-piece dominance and contributions in open play. He also became a mainstay for Western Province in the Currie Cup, South Africa’s premier domestic competition, where his versatility in scrums and loose play earned him recognition. His consistency led to contract extensions with Western Province, alongside fellow props Leon Lyons and Sazi Sandi, reflecting his importance to the team.

By 2024, at age 31, Fouché was described as playing the best rugby of his career, dominating scrums in the URC and Investec Champions Cup. His form earned him a call-up to a Springbok alignment camp in early 2024, one of 16 uncapped players selected by coach Rassie Erasmus. While he has yet to earn a Test cap, his inclusion signals his proximity to achieving his lifelong dream of representing South Africa. In the 2024/2025 season, Fouché continued to shine, notably playing 35 minutes in a friendly match for South Africa against the Barbarians on June 28, 2025, which ended in a 54–7 victory. His statistics across seasons, while not including tries, conversions, or penalties (as props rarely contribute in these areas), highlight his reliability in set pieces and minimal disciplinary issues, with no yellow or red cards reported in recent seasons.
