Born 21 August 1995 in Paarl, Western Cape, Johannes "Johan" Momsen (1.95m, 114kg) attended Paarl Gimnasium before representing University of Stellenbosch (Maties) in Varsity Cup and club rugby (2015-2018).
Momsen burst onto the pro scene signing with Griquas and making his Currie Cup Debut (2019) as a replacement vs Sharks. He made 22 appearances in total.
He moved to the Major League Rugby (MLR) in the USA, representing Rugby ATL (2020-2023) achieving 53 caps and scoring 10 tries during his time at the club. Notable achievements during this period include being awarded the MLR Forward of the Year in 2021 (201 tackles) as well as being selected in the All-MLR First XV (2022-23). He was then traded to the Houston SaberCats (Sep 2023) where he made an instant impact over his 32 caps (2024-25). He led the team to the Western Conference title in 2025.
Some of his 2025 Highlights include playing 19 out of 19 games (Ironman), of which 17 were starts, making 220 tackles (7th MLR), scoring 3 tries as well as being selected for the All-MLR Second XV.
Johan also spent some time in New Zealand and played for the Manawatu Turbos during his off season during 2022 to 2024.
Johan is renowned for incredible work rate, leadership & lineout nous, Momsen has achieved 85 MLR caps and as a Saffa Abroad he could be viewed as a future USA Eagles.
