Gert Kemp was born in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, a region renowned for its rugby heritage. He attended Paul Roos Gymnasium, one of South Africa’s top rugby schools, known for producing Springboks like Schalk Brits and Willie le Roux. At Paul Roos, Kemp developed into a powerful loose forward, recognized for his ball-carrying ability, physicality at the breakdown, and leadership on the field.

Kemp emerged as a standout player for Western Province (DHL WP) at the U18 Craven Week in 2024 and 2025. In 2025, he represented Western Province at the FNB U18 Craven Week held at Hoërskool Middelburg in Mpumalanga, where his performances as a loose forward were instrumental in the team’s strong showing. His ability to dominate collisions and work tirelessly at rucks earned him selection for the SA Schools team in 2025, as announced by SA Rugby on July 12, 2025.

As part of the SA Schools squad, Kemp played in the annual match against the SA Schools ‘A’ team on July 17, 2025, in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. He was also included in the SA U18 team for the U18 International Series in August 2025, starting at No. 8 in matches against France, Ireland, and England at venues in Paarl and Cape Town. Notably, Kemp contributed to South Africa’s 43–21 victory over France on August 8, 2025, at Hoërskool Durbanville, helping secure the Medhi Narjissi Trophy. His physical presence and work rate were highlighted in match reports, with SuperSport Schools noting his effectiveness in the loose and at the breakdown.

Kemp’s performances at Paul Roos Gymnasium have also been a focal point, with the school’s 2025 season showcasing their depth of talent. NextGenXV praised Kemp as one of the “litter of loose forwards” in South Africa’s schoolboy rugby scene, alongside players like Quintin Potgieter and Josh Neill, who also represented Western Province and SA Schools.

At 18, Gert Kemp is a prime candidate for the Junior Springboks (SA U20) in 2026, with his performances positioning him for a professional contract with DHL Western Province and potentially the DHL Stormers in the United Rugby Championship (URC). His physicality, versatility, and breakdown skills draw comparisons to Springbok loose forwards like Duane Vermeulen. Continued development in Western Province’s robust junior system, under coaches like Dawie Snyman, could see Kemp transition to professional rugby by 2027. His trajectory suggests potential for a future Springbok call-up, particularly given South Africa’s depth in the loose forward position.
