He progressed through the youth ranks and started his professional career with the Pumas, a provincial team in South Africa. His powerful performances soon caught the attention of larger franchises, leading to his move to the Free State Cheetahs.

With the Cheetahs, Vermeulen's career gained momentum as he played in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby. His performances earned him a move to the Stormers, where he continued to excel and established himself as one of the top loose forwards in Super Rugby.
