Willemse attended Hoërskool Monument in Krugersdorp, a school known for its strong rugby culture. His size and physical presence made him a standout player in school rugby, paving the way for his future professional career.
Willemse represented the Golden Lions at youth level before moving to the Blue Bulls. His performances in youth competitions, including the Under-18 Craven Week, showcased his potential as a powerful lock, leading to his inclusion in the Blue Bulls academy.
Willemse made his professional debut for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. His physicality, line-out expertise, and strong presence in the tight phases quickly established him as a key player for the team.
Willemse also played for the Bulls in Super Rugby, where he gained recognition for his robust performances in the highly competitive tournament. His contributions in the line-outs and his work rate in open play were instrumental to the Bulls' forward pack.
In 2014, Willemse moved to France to join Top 14 club Grenoble. His impact was immediate, and he soon became a key player for the team.
