Lood de Jager attended Hugenote Hoërskool in Springs, where he began to develop his rugby skills. His impressive performances at the school level earned him recognition and the opportunity to further his rugby career.

De Jager represented the Leopards at various youth levels, showcasing his physicality, lineout skills, and work rate. His talent was evident early on, leading to his inclusion in the Leopards' senior squad. De Jager made his professional debut with the Leopards in the Currie Cup. His strong performances as a young lock caught the attention of larger provincial teams.

In 2013, de Jager joined the Free State Cheetahs, where he made a significant impact in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby. His height, strength, and skill in the lineout made him a key player for the Cheetahs, and he quickly became one of the standout locks in South African rugby.
