Louis "Chucky" van der Westhuizen, born on February 25, 1995, in Windhoek, Namibia, is a professional rugby union player renowned for his role as a hooker. He currently represents the Free State Cheetahs in South Africa's domestic competitions and has been a pivotal member of the Namibian national team, the Welwitschias.
Van der Westhuizen's rugby journey began with the Leopards, where he showcased his potential in the youth divisions. He further honed his skills at North-West University (NWU), captaining the NWU Pukke in the Varsity Cup between 2016 and 2018. His leadership and performance earned him the Johan Claassen Trophy in 2019, recognizing him as NWU’s Rugby Institute Player of the Year.
Making his test debut on October 11, 2015, against Argentina during the Rugby World Cup in Leicester, van der Westhuizen has since earned 21 caps for Namibia, crossing the try line six times. He represented Namibia in both the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups and was instrumental in securing the team's qualification for the 2023 tournament in France.
In May 2020, van der Westhuizen signed a one-year contract with the Free State Cheetahs, marking a significant step in his professional career. He made an immediate impact, debuting on October 10, 2020, against the Pumas in the Super Rugby Unlocked series. Demonstrating exceptional try-scoring ability for a forward, he finished the 2022 Currie Cup season as the leading try-scorer, crossing the line 15 times—a record surpassed only by Jan-Harm van Wyk's 16 tries in 1997 for the Free State.
