Neels Volschenk is a dynamic South African rugby union player, known for his versatility as a loose forward, primarily playing as a blindside flanker or number 8. Born on March 14, 2003, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, the 22-year-old stands at 1.86 meters and weighs 104 kg, bringing physicality and work rate to the field. A product of Grey College, one of South Africa’s premier rugby schools, Volschenk’s early career was marked by his time with the Blue Bulls academy after completing his schooling.
Volschenk’s professional journey began with the Blue Bulls, where he played from 2022 to 2023 before returning to his hometown to join the Toyota Cheetahs in 2024. His transition to the Cheetahs was spurred by a standout performance in the 2024 Varsity Cup, where he captained the Shimlas to a thrilling 45-42 victory over UCT Ikeys in the final, earning widespread praise for his leadership and impact. This success led to his call-up to the Cheetahs’ senior squad alongside seven teammates, a move endorsed by coach Frans Steyn, who lauded Volschenk’s work ethic and influence.
In the 2024/25 season, Volschenk made significant contributions in the Currie Cup, scoring three tries and logging 389 minutes across multiple matches. His stats include 56 carries, 177 meters carried, eight defenders beaten, and 68 tackles at an 87% completion rate, showcasing his all-around prowess. Notably, he scored the Cheetahs’ only try in a hard-fought 7-5 win against the Sharks in Clermont, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer. In the Challenge Cup, he debuted against Lyon on January 18, 2025, scoring a try in 12 minutes of play.
Volschenk’s rugby philosophy is shaped by his father, his biggest inspiration, who introduced him to the sport and remains a constant supporter. With no pre-game rituals, he focuses on hard work and team-first mentality, drawing inspiration from rugby legends like Richie McCaw and Duane Vermeulen. As of September 2025, Volschenk remains uncapped at the senior Springbok level but is a rising star in South African rugby, with a clear pathway to higher honors through his performances with the Cheetahs.
