AJ Meyer was born in Bloemfontein, Free State, and attended Grey College, one of South Africa’s premier rugby schools, known for producing 46 Springboks. Growing up in a rugby-rich environment, Meyer developed into a towering lock with a reputation for his physicality, lineout dominance, and work rate, quickly becoming a standout in schoolboy rugby.
Meyer has been a key figure for Grey College’s 1st XV, contributing to their strong performances in the 2024 and 2025 seasons. At the U18 Craven Week in 2024 and 2025, he represented the Free State Cheetahs, showcasing his ability to anchor the lineout and dominate in the tight exchanges. His performances earned him selection for the SA Schools team in both years, a testament to his consistency and potential. In 2025, Meyer was named in the SA Schools squad that faced the SA Schools ‘A’ team on July 17 at Hoërskool Middelburg in Mpumalanga, where he started at lock (No. 5).
Meyer also played a pivotal role in the U18 International Series in August 2025, representing the SA U18 team at venues in Paarl and Cape Town. He started at lock in matches against France, Ireland, and England, earning the Man of the Match award in South Africa’s 45–5 victory over Ireland on August 12, 2025, at Boland Landbou. His commanding forward display, particularly in the lineout and scrums, was highlighted by SuperSport Schools, despite Ireland’s disruption of South Africa’s lineout. Meyer’s contribution helped the SA U18 team secure the Medhi Narjissi Trophy with a 43–21 win over France on August 8, 2025, at Hoërskool Durbanville.
In 2025, Meyer was recognized as a top schoolboy prospect by NextGenXV, which praised his emergence as a powerful lock, noting the depth of talent in South Africa’s second-row pipeline alongside players like JF van Heerden. His performances at Grey College and in national age-group competitions have drawn comparisons to Springbok locks like Ruan Nortje, with his 1.95 m frame and physical presence marking him as a future star.
At 18, Meyer is a prime candidate for the Junior Springboks (SA U20) in 2026, with his performances positioning him for a professional contract with the Stormers. His size, skill set, and experience in high-level competitions make him a strong contender for a future Springbok call-up, potentially following the path of locks like Eben Etzebeth. Continued development in the Stormers system will unlock the future potential.
